Vista volume bar constantly goes back to zero (0)?

This is really strange. I've had the computer for a couple months now-dell xpsm1530 with vista business edition. Anyway, as of today when i go to the tool bar and drag volume to any level, it steadily goes right back to zero. WTF!? It was fine before. And no, I don't have it on mute. It literally drops back to zero.
